Paint Colour Schemes for Safari Themed Kids' Bedrooms

So, you've decided to style your imminent arrival's nursery or kids' bedroom and a blank-canvas, pristine white seems like a brilliant idea. In theory great, but as you'll soon discover it's highly impractical. You'll be glad to hear that the base colours for this animal-inspired room scheme are a little more forgiving when it comes to mucky paws and tired-mummy mishaps.

As always, Rachael's love of all things Farrow and Ball prevails so we've got the gorgeous olive green Bancha and the denim-hued, De Nimes as the signature paint colours. Farrow and Ball describe Bancha as a protective and sobering tone so it's perfect for creating serenity and calm – something you'll need an abundance of for life with littles.

Add tones of the palest pink blush, as seen above on the pink cabinet. This is an Ikea Lixhult cupboard painted in Farrow & Ball's Pink Ground. Delicate pastel grey-blue's breathe light into your palette. Adding these lighter shades can be particularly useful if you are working with smaller spaces and want to create a sense of airiness and freedom.

It's well known that F&B paints are on the higher end of the price range but what I will say is that they are hard-wearing and durable so if you can stretch the budget, it will probably pay off in the long run.  New arrivals and mini-me's can pull on the purse strings so we totally understand if you need a cheaper paint alternative. The usual go to for similar paints https://e-paint.co.uk didn't throw up high street alternatives this time but you can, of course, try any of the brilliant paint matching services at B&Q, Homebase or your local independent trader.

Safari Nursery Prints and Animal Wall Art

The hard work is complete, and you can now get to work on your wall art. This room design fuses typography and animal safari prints, a great technique that not only adds layers and dimension to your overall look but also makes your budget work harder. When you are through the younger years, the Born To Be Wild print will still have 'legs' and no doubt even greater resonance!

The Born To Be Wild Print comes in a variety of colourways and there's even an illustrated version complete with giraffes, zebras, elephants, ostriches, snakes, toucans, leopards and crocs. The print featured here is 12x16 inches in the white wood frame.

No safari scene is complete without the king of cats and this room set features Pretty in Print Art's friendly lion with a very important message – 'always have courage to be brave'. What a lovely sentiment to instil in your own little park rangers.

Check out other variations of Rachael's Mr Lion print without the quote, hiding in leafy foliage and great teamed with those Bancha-green painted walls.

There's also a version with striped blue background detail (with and without quote). Click the image below to shop all lion prints:

This safari room makeover majors on the animals and since elephant nursery décor is as popular as ever, we've included the much-loved Elephants in The Jungle print – available with and without green landscape detail.

All of Rachael's designs are printed professionally onto a warm white, fine art paper with a museum quality, matte finish, which gives way to a beautiful depth of colour. The state-of-the-art inks mean your prints will never fade and will always look as fresh as the day you ordered them. A high quality perspex glazing is used in place of glass which is not only safe around little ones, but also reduces glare.

You can buy all of the safari prints framed or unframed and even on canvas if you prefer. Sizes start from 6" x 8" and go right through to a mammoth A0 spec.

Accessorise Your Safari Room

Accessorising a children's room or nursery is like decorating the sponge cake you've toiled over all morning. It's worth the wait, is all about the detail and, done well, is deeply satisfying.

You can pick and mix the safari style accessories according to your room size and you can use these decorative items to do a mini makeover of a children's room without the full paint job. That's the beauty of accessorising. Small steps equal big results.

Lions and Leaves and Crocs, Oh My

Cushions can add bundles of character to a room set at a relatively low cost and can be a great prop for incorporating into storytelling and bedtime reading. Enter this bashful little number from Nobodinoz at Scandiborn. I just love the velvet touch of this lion cushion and the fact it's made from organic cotton makes it even more perfect for your little cubs' room.

Complete your safari hideout with some cute and comfy cushions from the fabulous guys and gals at Scandiborn. Their selection of accessories is vast and includes these lovely, leafy creations – perfect for a little propping up here and there.

Lorena canals' knitted baby leaf is the perfect addition to a tropical, safari, animal or adventure themed room.

And this luscious velvet leaf by Nobodinoz is made from super soft eco velvet and dreamy to the touch.

You'll no doubt have been introduced to Jeremy the crocodile before. He's a regular fixture in Rachael's safari room scenes and provides hours of fun and cuddles. So popular is this gorgeous organic creation by Meri Meri, he was out of stock again at the time of writing. Let's hope he doesn't become an endangered species and comes out of hiding soon.

Mr Snake by Ferm Living at Scandiborn is decorative but functional. The smaller version at £49.95 is the perfect toy, and the larger version can double up as a protective bed bumper, priced at £95.95. Your sales pitch to the penny-pinching partner is 'you can't put a price on safety'!

Kid Friendly Plants for Jungle and Safari Themed Rooms

Putting living plants in kids' rooms can be a divisive subject so I'm erring on the side of caution here and going with artificial. That said, ingesting anything can be a hazard so I'm working on the assumption as with all accessories that little ones would not be left unsupervised.

The banana tree in the image above is by Blooming Artificial - they have a fantastic range of artificial plants and trees. The quality is fantastic and delivery is quick.

Another alternative is Fejka by IKEA, Fiddle-fig tree to you and me, is the perfect low-maintenance greenery to add a touch of camouflage to your safari room. It's faux foliage at its finest but you'd be hard pushed to spot it. Aside from being a great imitation a splash of green is a great addition to a child's room. Did you know that the human eye can see more shades of green than any other colour? Perfect for stimulating and developing your little one.

Wall Decorations for your Animal Safari Room

A wall mounted animal head will add a quirky touch to your safari room and can be reemployed elsewhere in the house. This felt elephant head by Fiona Walker is great value at £49. I love that it's hand-crafted in Jaipur and means that each piece will be slightly unique.

For those smaller decorative items that you want to keep out of harm's way, invest in a stylish shelf like this beech and birch wood Round Dorm wall hanger by Ferm Living at Scandiborn. It's great for little trinkets and would be the perfect shelter for some natural wood safari animals, like this set below from Kidly.

A touch of bunting can go a long way in dressing a room. This rainbow garland in by Nobodinoz is the perfect palette of earthy clay, ochre, leafy green and natural blush. Be sure to hang out of reach and secure well.

The final wall accoutrements is a wire wool sign by Hey Kiddo Studio. Sleepyhead in denim blue is pictured below, but there are thirteen other delectable shades to choose from or you could opt for a different word altogether. 'Willdlings' and 'Stay Wild' would also work well in this safari room plan.

On the floor

Intrepid tootsies need a little comfort so a luxuriously soft rug underfoot is a great addition to an animal-themed room. There's no shortage of paws, claws and whiskers in this safari bedroom and Oyoy's lion rug makes a great pairing with Pretty in Print Art's Lion print.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this guided expedition of safari inspired rooms fit for your little wanderers. Animals are an integral part of early learning and young children have a natural fascination with them. Safari interiors make a wonderful choice for nurseries and bedrooms and can provide great sources of stimulation and education for your growing child. Let your imagination run wild and create an unforgettable escape for you and your little ones.

Finally before I go, I couldn't resist leaving you with a few of my favourite story time books – I've read them a gazillion times to my own child but I never grow tired of the magic.

Love Claire xx
